Profile
Positioning
The German Police University is the university for senior police officers of Federal Government and the Länder and the most important forum between science and practice for the discussion of policing matters in Germany.
It stands for an open-minded, value-bound police, which is aware of its responsibility in a democratic constitutional state, for freedom, security and inner peace. The German Police University takes into account the mutuality and the federal variety of police work in Germany.
Teaching
The central task of the German Police University is the best possible, uniform qualification of senior police officers. The university meets this claim with a narrow interweaving of theory and practice. Based on a sophisticated scientific foundation, existing competencies are enhanced and expanded. On this basis, particular importance is attached to practical knowledge and outstanding professional competence.
Training and advanced training are designed interdisciplinary and according to modern, methodical-didactical principles, which the German Police University develops in view of the target groups.
Individual modules of the master course of studies "Public Administration - Police Management" are carried out decentralised and thus allow an optimum curricular interlocking within the system of module studies.
In addition to this master course of studies, the German Police University provides a user-oriented, tailor-made and up-to-date advanced training in the fields of security, criminal- and police strategies and tactics. The university sees itself as a national and international forum of discussion and reflection for senior police officers.
With this concept of further professional approaches, the German police react to serious changes within society as well as to specific demands in the field of inner security.
Research / Police Science
The bundling of police-relevant approaches to establish police science as an own discipline is another important task of the German Police University. It therefore forms and determines the scientific discourse of police science in Germany.
Police science is a cross-sectional discipline related to function, organization and activities of police services, with strong characteristics of social sciences, but also of jurisprudence and economics.
Within this frame, the research focus of the German Police University lies in the field of leadership and management, operation, crime combat, road safety and law. Furthermore, it cultivates the scientific exchange with all relevant national research institutions and with the international Scientific Community.
The university gives impetus to further improve police work in Germany and beyond the German borders. It therefore looks for transfer- and third-party funded projects in practice.
The Institute for Police Technology is responsible for the further development of police technologies.
Tradition
The German Police University has emerged from the Polizeiführungsakademie, which so far has been the central location for the qualification of senior staff and excellent training. It will keep to the proven structure of scientists and experienced police officers in teaching and research. The responsible bodies of the German Police University - Federal State and Laender -at the same time decide on the requirements.
They safeguard their common rights and duties towards the university via the Board of Trustees. Among its traditional fortes are the concept of a classical campus university and the fact that practically experienced students contribute their knowledge to the course of studies.
Internationality
Being an internal university, the German Police University holds a monopoly for the training of senior police officers in Germany, yet it competes with comparable institutions of other nations. It strives for a top position in international comparison.
